Bone Grafting
Post-Operative Care

Bleeding

  • Slight bleeding or pink saliva is normal for the first 24-48 hours.
  • Avoid spitting, using straws, or rinsing forcefully for the first 24 hours.

Swelling and Bruising

  • Swelling is common and typically peaks within 48-72 hours.
  • Apply ice packs to the outside of your check (5 minutes on, 5 minutes off) for the first 24-48 hours.
  • Keep your head elevated with extra pillows when lying down.

Pain Management

  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen may also be recommended.
  • Avoid aspirin, which can increase bleeding.
  • Take all prescribed antibiotics as directed until finished, even if you feel better.

Oral Hygiene

  • Do not brush the surgical site for the first three days.
  • After 24 hours, you may gently rinse with salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water) 2-3 times daily, especially after meals.
  • Avoid commercial mouthwashes unless prescribed.

Diet

  • Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days (smoothies, yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, soup, etc…).
  • Avoid chewing on the graft site.
  • Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy or hard foods for at least one week.
  • Stay hydrated but avoid straws.

Activity

  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for at least 48-72 hours.
  • Avoid bending, heavy lifting or vigorous exercise during the first week.
  • Do not smoke or vape for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Smoking can cause graft failure.
  • Avoid alcohol during the initial healing period and while taking antibiotics.

Stitches & Membranes

  • If you have dissolvable stitches, they may fall out on their own in 5-10 days.
  • A non-resorbable membrane acts as a physical barrier to the treatment site. Leave the membrane in place. Membranes are designed to protect and promote healing.
  • If the membrane becomes loose or falls out, it’s usually not a cause for immediate alarm but please contact our office to confirm.
  • We will remove the membrane at a follow up appointment, typically 4-6 weeks after surgery.
